Bathroom Safeguards Take children as a group at a set time. Always prop doors open and wait outside in the hall. If a child needs help, one teacher may assist but need the other teacher to step far enough into the bathroom to ensure a clear view. In other words, never be "out of sight of at least one other adult" when you are with a child. If a child needs to use the bathroom at other times, ask a supervisor to assist. Do not send junior helpers to the bathroom with children. Other Guidelines Do express love and caring in appropriate ways: 1. Bending down to the child's eye level and speaking kindly and listening to them carefully. 2. Taking the child's hand and leading them to an activity. 3. Putting an arm around the shoulders of a child who needs comforting or quieting. 4. Taking both of the child's hands as you say, "You did such a good job!" or "I am so glad to see you! We missed you!". 5. Patting a child on the head, hand, shoulder, or back to affirm them. 6. Holding a child by the shoulders or hands to keep their attention while you redirect behavior. 7. Gently holding a child's chin to help them focus on what you are saying. Avoid 1. Kissing a child or coaxing a child to kiss you. 2. Touching a child in any area that would be covered by a bathing suit. (Except when assisting a child in the bathroom in the presence of another adult.) 3. Always carrying older children or having them on your lap.
