In the Bible, there was a man I want to study, his name was David. He was the only figure in all of scripture that was called "a man after God's own heart" and it was God who called him that. There isn't a better testimony about another man than that one. No other man in the scriptures is mentioned more than David. No other man had more written about him in scripture than David. Abraham had 14 chapters and so did Joseph. Jacob had 11. Elijah had 10. But David had 66 chapters and that doesn't include the 59 references to him in the New Testament. David was a poet, musician, courageous warrior, a national statesman and a king. He distinguished himself as one of God's greatest men. But the part about David I appreciate the most is, he wasn't perfect. We will see as we study David that he was anything but perfect. After earning his nation's respect and trust, he blows it all for a short season of lustful pleasure. After the consequences kick in, we also learn he was a very weak father and allowed partiality to rule in his leadership skills. David was a great man yet far from perfect. Nevertheless, he lived a life with strengths worth imitating. We are going to spend several weeks looking at David, reading about his life and learning from his strengths and weaknesses. David is the only character who desired to build a house for God. God found that idea intriguing but also adequately impossible. However, God does let David experience things in his heart which are similar to what we have today in ours. He had an intimate relationship with God much like what the Christian has today. Lesson
